Sutra 2.33 NEGATIVE THOUGHTS (and a special question for parents)
Swami Satchidanada comments on Sutra 2.33 ” When disturbed by negative thoughts, opposite [positive] ones should be thought of. This is pratipaksha bhavana.”
Satchidananda’s main advice is to change your environment – I agree that is helpful, but I take issue with the idea that negative thoughts can be effectively dealt with by replacing them with positive ones. I think another approach – acceptance and validation – (from my favorite, Mama Gena) is more effective – listen to find out. (Click over to “Podcasts” section to listen)
Finally, parents, if you are having an argument and you child interrupts unwittingly – does this defuse the situation effectively, as Satchidananda suggests?
